Un-Curry Cooking

Months and months ago, Malea and I bought a groupon for an Un-Curry Indian cooking class. There were so many different classes, but only one appealed to us, 101 Spices. The only problem was the timing. Turns out I work during the day and therefore we had to wait about five months for the class to come around on a Sunday. July 31st was the day. The class was in a cool restaurant supply store in Culver City. Malea and I almost missed the class browsing the cool stuff.
I really wanted her spice box....Malea took these pics of some of the spices, but nothing does it justice.

She made several different recipes beginning with Chai, then some sauteed potatoes. The green beans with coconut were good. The lentils were actually kind of bland. The rice with cardamom other spices was awesome, but my very favorite was the "salad." The salad was butternut squash all squashed up with plain yogurt and lots of spices. And finally a dessert made of milk cooked down with vermicelli and spices.

I'm still considering buying the cookbook... By the way, did you know that "curry" is actually a leaf? And the spice blend we call curry was created by the British, as was Chicken Tikka Masala, which still remains my favorite "Indian" dish.
